Hawaii State Federal Credit Union
Hawaii Kai, Hawaii
Hawaii State Federal Credit Union (FCU) wanted to show commitment to their members by modernizing their branches with a clean fresh look and the latest technological innovations. After visiting other projects on the islands, including a branch project for First Hawaiian Bank, Hawaii State FCU reached out to NewGround. The credit union learned about NewGround’s history and expertise in the financial industry and its commitment to working with local institutions and the local contracting community.
The Hawaii Kai project was a design/build remodel of an existing tenant retail space. The work included demolition and new work in the conference room, back of house, and the lobby and office area. The NewGround Design Team envisioned making the space as open as possible, creating harmony, balance, and proportion to establish the feeling of a larger space. To accomplish the open feel and bring as much light as possible through the branch, the designers incorporated full-height modular wall systems for the private offices. With this design, each office received natural light without sacrificing privacy. A low profile ‘cash bar’ was incorporated in place of the traditional teller line. In this case, they lowered all the counters to meet ADA requirements, which gives interactions a more personal touch and encourages the employees to walk around the branch to engage members.
Utilizing the ‘cash bar’ design concept, part of the redesign included changes in how the branch is staffed. The entire staff is considered “Universal Bankers,” who will take initiative in welcoming the members and accompanying them to a work station to perform all types of transactions. This change greatly enhances the experience that the member has in the branch. Since Hawaii State FCU wanted to be on the forefront of technology, the NewGround team incorporated a technology bar into the space. It is an area equipped with smartphones and tablet devices where members can learn about online banking and mobile app capabilities, complete mobile deposits, and receive paperless statements on the device they prefer. The design of this branch gives Hawaii State FCU a vibrant, modern brand appearance.
The build process proceeded with minimal challenges and was completed by highly skilled and experienced local Hawaii subcontractors who provided excellent workmanship. All millwork was manufactured by local craftsmen and installed by local subcontractors. The new space is also more energy efficient with lighting controls, new HVAC, Mechoshades, and DIRTT Glass Modular Partitions that all greatly reduce energy consumption, reducing the project’s carbon footprint.
In October 2017, Hawaii State FCU was presented with the prestigious Design Award from The Building Industry Association of Hawaii. The Renaissance Building and Remodeling Awards celebrates excellence in building and renovation, and recognizes the collaborative partnerships within the industry.
