Champion Credit Union has been part of Canton, NC, for nearly 100 years and wanted a space to better serve their members and better support their employees. The chosen site brought its own difficulties, sitting on a steep hillside that required significant excavation and retaining wall work before construction could begin. In recent years, the town endured flooding, the closure of its paper mill, and the effects of Hurricane Helene. The challenges were fierce, but close collaboration turned this project into one NewGround will never forget.
We worked closely with Champion’s leadership and Beverly-Grant Construction to deliver the project despite weather delays and the complexity of the site. More than 47,000 cubic yards of rock and soil were removed to prepare the foundation for the two-story, 30,000 sq. ft. headquarters. Staff input played a pivotal role in the design process, from testing workstation layouts to helping shape features like quiet rooms, fitness areas, and break spaces. The finished design balances open offices with private areas. The new headquarters includes branded environmental graphics such as a topographic mural representing the local mountains.
The new headquarters gives Champion Credit Union a modern workplace that supports both employees and members. It includes flexible work areas, collaborative meeting rooms with advanced technology, wellness amenities, and outdoor gathering spaces. Local contractors contributed to the build, and their work is now part of a facility that reflects Champion’s continued investment in Canton. The project has been recognized as an important step forward for the town and stands as a pillar of hope for how leadership, planning, and collaboration can shape a lasting outcome. We are honored to have worked with Champion on this impactful project.
